Policy Brief

Promoting Transparency and Accountability in the Management of Extractive I

Liberia demonstrated its desire and commitment in the promotion of an open and accountable management of its extractive resources by joining the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in 2008.

The EITI is the global standard to promote an open and accountable management of natural resources in its member countries. It is guided by the belief that a country’s natural resources belong to its citizens. As such, the EITI standard requires the disclosure of information along the extractive industry value chain from the point of extraction, to how revenue is generated to enhance government performance and the overall economy. By doing so, the EITI seeks to strengthen public and corporate governance, promote understanding of natural resource management, and provide the data to inform reforms for greater transparency and accountability in the extractive sector.

These issues compelled the Economic Governance Unit (EGU) in collaboration with the National Integrity System (NIS) Mandate Area of the Governance Commission (GC) to organize this policy dialogue with focus on Promoting Transparency, Accountability and Management in the Extractive Sector.
